Saw them there in May (19th?? - it was the Friday of the Canadian long
weekend - flew in from Winnipeg).  The venue is very intimate, with no
seats save for some at a few scattered tables and on a small balcony at
the back.  The Avalon is a dance club, with bars on both sides and
temporary bars elsewhere set up for concerts, so beer is readily available
at all times.

Best place other than right up front on the dance floor is on a rail at
the sides of the dance floor, where the bars are, which gives you a bit of
height on the masses  and puts you at eye level with the band.  As for
being there, it's as if you had the Hip playing on the deck in your
backyard - very cool.  Mind you, what do I know? - I live in an
appartment.

Anyways, the Avalon is on a street adjacent to Fenway park, with bars and
clubs galore for after event partying.  Have fun and enjoy.  I may be
there on business, so, just in case, already have my tickets.  In any
event, you'll no doubt see "phidozer", the very proud Harvard student
(judging from his mentioning it in most of his posts), at the event
(natch!).

The problem, at least in May, was that the club opened up later that night
for the regular dance crowd.  As a result, Clarissa took the stage at
about 7pm, the Hip at 8 pm, and the whole thing was over by 10pm.

Yep, I caught them there in May of this year...it was only the 3rd
show on the tour so the arrangements were quite short and straight forward.
Not a lot of jamming by the boys. Still a great show, though.
As for the club, it's great! Right under the shadow of Fenway Park.
There's 3 or 4 different bars so no waiting...If you get there an hour to
an hour and a half before show time you'll get right to the front of the
stage with no problem...Bostonians seem to be a late-coming bunch...1000
people would be about right as far as capacity.
