was like a backyard.
and it was crowded.
we wound our way up some narrow stairs
and into a little room with a bar that was
quiet and ordered some more fat tires and some meat.
went down and stood in what would have been the second row on bobbys
side. they walked out onto the stage underneath an austin sky and hello.

EMPEROR PENGUIN (acoustic)
new orleans is sinking
nice. nice. set. long time running was amazing. gordie and the boys were having a great time. the emperor penguin made my night. after the show we hung out and met the entire band. christine happened to have a roll of pictures of nora and gordie in her bag and we showed gordie the pictures of our little cutie-pies and told him the story about how we met in vermont. he saw gordie and said ahh there's the little scamp. he signed a picture of little gordie and the setlist. writing "grow you."

I attended the show in Austin. They played about 20 tunes.
Tiger the Lion was my favorite. It rocked and so did I. The
crowd was a little on the mello side. It was a great outdoor venue.
Encore, NO sinking, Punguin, and ?( I can't remember the last tune).
Gord was a little more chatty during some of the tunes. Awsome time.

The Austin show was a gem indeed. The entire day felt like a holiday-the
anticiaption for 8p was killing me. Got down to Stubbs at 7:30p with
just enough time to throw down some great tex-mex and margaritas across
the street at Jaime's Spanish Village . The stars were aligned as the boys
rocked the outdoor stage at Stubbs It was good to see a solid turnout
for this show. The ticket salesperson told me 1500 tickets were sold
pre-sale and attendance was estimated at about 2000. This is so
great considering the band is not getting any radio play in this town.
There really wasn't much promotion of the show to speak of.
What is wrong with Sire, do they even work the band south of the Canadian
border? Don't get me started on Rolling Stone Magazine's complete
lack of coverage. I did my part, recruiting and introducing
co-workers to my favorite band. And the Hip did not let me down!
All these Hip rookies were blown away. The band gave an inspired
and tight performance and the sound was great. Music@Work material
is really sounding great. Kate and Chris are a nice accompaniment
.
As the band opened up with My Music @Work, you could tell we had
caught them on a good night!. Gord dressed in Green work shirt and
tie, began ranting as the song developed and got the crowd really revved
up. At one point he grabbed the microphone like a motorcycle handle and
pretended to ride around the stage. The setlist was different
from the Taste of
Chicago show I caught in July . It held a few gems I had
not heard live - Wheat Kings and Long Time Running- what a treat.
Gord introduced Twist My Arm with an exasperated " Let Ralph Debate!"
Giftshop was dedicated to Superdrag. During Nautical Disaster, Gord got
loose with another extended tyrade that I couldn't quite decipher, but
of course it was passionate. Wouldn't it be great if they set up a section
in front of Gord's monitor so you could hear his vocal embellishments!
The basswork on Nautical was outstanding. Gortd S. was amazing as usual.
Emporer Penguin was strong and Tiger The Lion was great! I was not
a big fan of the song until this show. At The Hundredth Meridian
(Where the real scalping begins!) ended the set. As the band wrapped
it up with a three song encore, the crowd showed their appreciation with
a resounding Hip! Hip! Hip! Thanks Hip for a great performance. Hey
tapers, I am looking for a recording of this show. Can you help me
out?
It's too bad we couldn't land the much coveted 2nd Austin show.
Is there any truth to the rumor of a southern U.S. tour in the spring?
I would love to see a Dallas, Houston and of course another Austin.
Now I'm getting greedy! See you in Chicago on December 1st.
