Well,

Just got back from my first Hip show of the summer and needless to say, it was incredible.  I was really afraid that the show would be cancelled since our entire drive from Pittsburgh took place in a torrential downpour.  I arrived as Chris and Kate were supposed to go on.  There opening had been cancelled due to the rain, which had thankfully stopped, and Guster came on within a half an hour.  I was actually pretty impressed with them despite their somewhat repetitive sound.  I was amazed at the number of people who were really into them, singing along etc.  In fact, we asked this group of
girls if they knew where the entrance to the stage was and they asked if we were going to the Guster show!!  Anyway, the Hip were, as I said, incredible.  The show had an incredible amount of energy to it.  So much so that I could barely hear Gord over the crowd at times.  I didn't this at all though it really gave the show a sense of something larger than myself type of feeling.  I'll leave a more detailed account to my fellow more capable henhousers who were also in attendance (such as Marietta Georgia Dabkowski ;) )  Here's a setlist in roughly the order it all went down.

Putting Down
Something On
El Dorado (Gord prefaced this with, "This song is about a doubt the size of
a car.")
Lake Fever
Grace, Too
The Bastard
Courage
Giftshop
ABAC
Train Overnight
Scared
Fireworks
Wild Mountain Honey
Nautical Disaster
My Music at Work
100th Meridian

Encore:

Poets
Freak Turbulence
New Orleans

I know I'm missing a song in there, can't think of what it is.

Highlights for me were Nautical, M@W, Meridian, NOIS, Gord hiding under/fighting with the mike stand, getting to see some friends and watching my brother experience his first show.  All in all, it was a wonderful time.

We just got home from Cleveland after a great show and some good time with family in Ohio.  First thing I do is check my email when I come home, my pets are claiming neglect!  It was wierd - being so "in the know of the hip"  and talking to them again - baker, sinclair, and langlois.   I felt almost
uncomfortable about it - for example - I said to Paul - "I heard" you quit smoking - as he posed for a pic with me with a lit cig.  OK I said to myself - you definately know too much, they are just people first and then talented musicians second - just kind of strange -

We thought of a new sign for the car - (green new beetle) for hip road trips - HIP or BUST - get it haha  you might of needed to be there - it was a long drive.

So I asked Rob Baker about the purple italians last night in Cleveland. (Cleveland rocks!)   He said that that colorful phrase refers to a time when he and Gord went through an art gallery together in California and Gord took a pen and some paper and wrote lyrics down through the entire time there.
He said that the use of the words is meant to represent how boisterous italian artists are in there color choices - how everyone else can use ordinary less dramatic color - but when you see an italian painting - it is loaded with bright bold color, and they are so good at that.   I think this is a little off from where we were in previous guesses - it's kind of interesting though - into the mind of Mr. Downie!!

There were so many Buffalo fans at the show last night - next to us there was a drunk middle aged man belting off every single new song with incredible enthuasism!  Don't know who it was - but that guy was damn entertaining. with him around noone could hear MY singing - aaah inhibition.

Boy the guys in the crowd are crazy for Kate - I could n't hear her much from the front - perhaps the sound was better out back - but the boys are really crazy for Kate -   I think Gord isn't pulling at his pants as much these days since she is around,  why does he do that?

I got some good pics of him last night - I guess now is the time to learn to make a web page.  I bought a digital camera today - never have I seen a digital camera with such creative control!!!  new toy.

good night - jennyg

why hello, kids. i just woke up from my 12 hour hibernation after driving home from detroit. so allow me to recount this weekend's events: friday-cleveland. i already posted the setlist, so i won't bother with that... i left the western new york area around 3pm with 1 friend, 1 acquaintance, 1 friend's mother, and 1 friend's mother's friend. so, we're all cool, having a good time driving down until we start to realize that said acquaintance is an asshole. ahh, well, no biggie. i was not having fun driving in the rain, and when we finally got there, they told us the gates would not be open until 7:30. so we went to eat. i forget the name of the place. right next to nautica, though. i was in a fairly terrible mood, worried that the show would be cancelled/postponed/cut short. the 4 guys that walked in after us (all decked out in canadian flags and whatnot) put their reservation in for "wendall clark". i laughed my ass off. anyhow, the timing ended up being perfect. we finished eating, went outside, walked in, met friends, and guster took the stage. i was pretty impressed. someone told me they sucked, so i wasn't prepared for much, but i was pleasantly surprised. and i was now in a good mood. so i mingled with the crowd, man was this a cool crowd! everybody was really nice, no one gave a shit whether you were canadian or american and from what i could gather...EVERYONE WAS FROM BUFFALO! woohoo! ok, maybe not everyone, but anyways, my point is, good crowd. i was about 20 feet from the stage on the paul side, and could see perfectly, no one was pushing or crowding. there was some beer spilling, but hey, there always is. anyhow, the hip were great. as always. it was great to hear eldorado, especially with kate singing, too. beautiful voice. i thought it was weird that they only did one encore, but the place probably had a curfew. it was all good, though. talked to a bunch of people after the show, and then locked(my keys)in the trunk of a car. with much prying and fishing around in there, we pulled them out, and drove home.
