"Good evening ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the greatest nightclub in the world, The House of Blues. Right here on the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles California. Where the fog has dropped into LA tonight. Let the fog be pierced. Let the fog be pierced by music, laughter, lyrics, guitar, percussion and vocals. From Kingston, Ontario here are Robby Baker, Gord
Sinclair, Paul Langlois, Johnny Fay and Gord Downie. The Tragically Hip." - Elwood Blues

It is Elwood isn't it? Belushi was Jake...right?

At any rate I had a blast at the show. Chris, Kate, Ben and Michael were good to see again. I've grown to enjoy catching
them on this tour. After Chris and Kate, I checked with Mark Vreeken at the soundboard to ask about taping. I know it's
open mic, but I think it's courteous to ask. Of course, he said it was no problem. Although I wanted to chat, I didn't bother him further 'cause he was working. Great guy, Mark. Anyway after that I was heading back to our spot and there was one of the bouncers just hanging out. I decided to let him know I was taping with consent. No problem...

Elwood introduced the band and they jump right into M@W, Gord is riding his mic stand into the sunset... Next was Grace, Too:

"just sit on their helmets all day because they saw some fuckin movie and charlie sheen did it that way and i can't even get a fuckin word in edgewise it's like i'm in a platoon of john wayne's. john wayne's oh yeah. lookout incoming..."

The 5th song (i'll post the setlist in a sec) Fully, I get a tap on my elbow and a bouncer asking me if I'm taping. He takes me to the back, I protest I have clearance (clarence). He says if I'm taping I should have a pass and I immediately thought of Livi. Livi I think we need a tapers badge... He checks with production and they tell them I'm alright and he lets me back in. I'm back before Fully ends. I was pissed at the time but it's kinda funny now. Any henhousers see this happen?

The first set ends and I think to myself, "self, that was only about 12 songs or so, what's up with that?" Right then Elwood
comes on to tell us not to go anywhere, "the Hip will be back in a bit for another set!!" We weren't supposed to get an evening
with but we did.

Train was the 2nd song of the 2nd set. As soon as Rob hit his opening note his guitar went out. The song sounds kinda shitty
without his guitar, but you get a great listen to Paul's. Kate sounded great in Flamenco, as the crowd consensus as usual were
whistles and catcalls (what the hell is a catcall anyway?)

I was very satisfied with the setlist, of course I always am.

Outside when we were leaving the venue, a guy with a maple leaf shirt on asks my friend's Philippine wife where she's from. "Are you from Canada? What the hell are you doing here?" She left with that being her first exchange with somebody from Canada. I tried an excuse that there are a few zealots everywhere but I don't that worked.

Still everybody in my group enjoyed the show. I was still working on Michigan time so it was 3:30 in the morning when it was all over.

Can I do it again this weekend? Please?????

hey everyone,
just flew back home from los angeles.  los angeles is one butt-ugly city (apologies to all la'ers on the list).  smog was absolutely
ridiculous.  flight down can easily be summed up as "freak turbulence" - i spent a good hour singing that song to myself...

crowd must have been at least 95% canadian or transplanted canadians.  nice to finally meet amit, and to see joanna again (you're going to get yours, bitch! - i'll let joanna explain :) ).  scoots - where were you? :)  there was a big texas contingent last night - that was cool.  setlists follow - not in order - and i'm going by memory.

show #1:
nois, boots or hearts, longtime running, courage, 100th meridian, fully, wheat kings, grace, greasy, fire, nautical, inch an hour, giftshop, springtime, abac, flamenco, sherpa, poets, bobcaygeon, fireworks, escape, emperor, n@w, tiger, lake fever, puttin down, train overnight, completists.

show #2:
blow at high dough, nois, opiated, little bones, twist my arm, luxury, courage, 100th, lionized, pigeon, daredevil, scared, titanic terrarium(!), giftshop, abac, poets, something on, save the planet, thompson, fireworks, chagrin, m@w, tiger, lake fever, puttin down, the bastard, toronto #4, freak turbulence and wild mountain honey.

i thought kate was great - the songs where she took over part of the song got loud cheers from the crowd... so to all the naysayers in the crowd about chris and kate, i don't know what you're talking about.

for every hip show i go to i think of sloan's line "it's not the band i hate, it's their fans" at least once.  why are some people total
pricks?  we had the flag wavers who were draping it over people, we had the big big guys who like to throw their elbows around and shove small girls out of the way.  but it was nice to see gord keeping an eye every time there was a bit of a kerfuffle.

house of blues has to be one of the sweetest venues i've ever seen.  looks like a dump from the outside, but it's great inside - very intimate.  and the private area upstairs is beautiful.

only 10 days till seattle... btw, anyone on the list have any extra tix to portland?

and i know for fact that at least one person recorded the first show - if you're on this list, can you please please please contact me.

A few more notes on show #1 (My first Hip show and first time at the House of Blues.)

Dan Aykroyd came out to introduce the band, which I half-expected since he's a fixture at HOB and introduced them on SNL and has a cottage in Kingston I think. In his Blues Brothers attire, he said "There's a fog upon L.A. tonight. Let's pierce through that fog with music and laughter. Ladies and gentlemen, from Kingston Ontario, ..." and introduced the band members by
name, a nice touch.

Lots of transplanted Canadians myself included. I think I saw 'Dawson' on the balcony. I saw Canadian flag bandannas, Maple Leafs shirts, temporary maple leaf tattoos etc. Agreed that although the Hip rule the Hip fans consist largely of jackasses. Lots of big drunken fools screaming nonsense and convulsing/dancing. A lot of them thought that the show was over at the
intermission (even though Gord said 'see you in 20 minutes') and were chanting 'Hip Hip Hip...' The sound guy had to pick up the mic and say "listen, they'll be back for a whole second set in a few minutes.'

They opened the first set with M@W and then Grace Too. The band sounded incredibly tight. Could not hear too many of Gord D's rants but you could tell Kate could in her monitor, she was practically laughing a good part of the time. Gord S's bass was really shaking the joint. Paul looking very much like Jimmy Page with the Les Paul slung real low. Rob wore leopard-skin
pants. Best moment of his I thought was when he tore into his part on Fireworks. Gord D sweating up a storm, threw his head back one time and water just poured off of him. At a couple of points he looked at the crowd between songs and said "You are SO great. You are." and nodded. Pretty funny. Johnny was grinning, looking like he was having a great time. Chris
looked like he couldn't be less interested. (Before the last song in the opening set, Chris gave this hard sell for his merch, by pointing over at the stand and saying "We've got CDs and stuff over there, so..." and began the song.)

'That night in Toronto' got a little roar from the L.A. crowd during BobC. I think Johnny screwed up and ended the song early, Gord was still doing his yodelly bit as it was ending. Other high points for me were Boots or Hearts, Courage, Puttin Down, Lake Fever ('Wanna break the hearts of everyone. And that's a lot of hearts.'), Stay, 100th (the crowd got to sing whispers of
disease...eulogy), NOIS, Wheat Kings. Would have liked to have heard Little Bones, Blow at High Dough and Locked in the Trunk of a Car .. maybe next time.
