Now that's a set list I think we all could live with.
Notes (brief cuz I'm so burnt out after a nite out partying and
a 6:00 am wake up call): My wife and I got Gordie's autograph.
WOW! He spent a long time mingling with people by the stage door.
What a nice guy!
Loved Chris & Kate. Her voice is powerful.
Where I happened to be standing, about 10 feet away from the stage,
it just happened to be a place where Gordie chose to fix his gaze a good
deal of the time. It seemed like he was singing Gift Shop just to
me.
When guy was crowd surfing, Gordie sang to the tune of The Beatles
"You're Gonna Lose That Girl," "You're going to hurt that girl!"
He followed up saying "I don't mean emotionally."
The sound in the Newport was incredible. Had to take my ear plugs
out about half the time so I could soak up every bit of the ambience.

The Hip, of course, was absolutely awesome, but my experience was a little less than stellar do to the security staff and some really annoying people right in front of me.
Kate and Chris opened great . . . the are a real joy to watch. There was the standard tension in the air before the Hip came out . . the crowd seemed way into it, maybe a little too into it. I personally don't find the need to "raise my horns in the air" at a Hip show, this isn't the Crue man. Anyway . . .
They open with Music@Work, but I didn't keep a setlist, but Courage was also ripped off right at the start and Opiated, which the crowd did not seem to get, oh well, I loved it. The venue was pretty cool. An old theater, with all the ornate shit still in place. My buddy and I parked near the board, as to have a good view and the best sound possible. The sound was okay, but somewhat difficult to hear Gord at times.
So The Hip seemed to be playing yet another great show, and all of the sudden, right in front of us, everyone backs away. Two security guards are wrestling some dude to the ground. Now these guys are huge, and they don't seem to be doing so well restraining this guy, while one guy's got a hold of him, the other one starts kicking him in the face, which, I don't care what the dude did, that is just uncalled for . . . so then this dude's buddies are not really happy with this, so they start jumping on the security guys, eventually, the whole mess gets taking outside.
So, the dude that got kicked in the face, to be know hereafter as, The Offender. One of The Offender's buds comes walking back in, I ask him if The Offender is okay. Well, the security guys rolled The Offender for smoking pot . . . go figure that . . . but . . . kicking him in the face, that's ridiculous. So, then I see the security guard that was doing the kicking, which I felt was really uncool that this guy was still walking around in there. I understand it is a difficult job, just like being a cop, but I still don't see the need to complete kick the shit out of someone, when clearly you (the security guy, all buffed out) should have the upper hand.
The whole thing just really bugged me . . . it basically ruined the
show for me . . . I just couldn't get into it . . . I kept trying
. . . then someone who looked like they were in charge walked by . . .
so I asked him why they needed to kick people in the face. He
didn't really care for my question, called me an asshole, and basically
just started yelling at me. Now I'm pretty much a woos, this guy
was huge, man he looked like he was going to kick my ass. I asked
for his name and a phone number I could call. Okay . . . I'm going
to get back to watching the show . . . but no . . . I just could not take
being treated like this . . . (all this time I'm missing The Hip, that's
the sad part for me) . . . so I try and find someone in charge, and eventually
run into the buffed up dude that called me an asshole's boss.
After talking to this guy for a while, he eventually apologized to me, and explains that kicking people in the head is not their policy.
Back to my spot, and Poets, is on! Finally I was able to get back into The Hip . . . Then they whip off Wheat Kings. And that really drew me back into the experience. That was perhaps one of the best single songs I've ever seen performed. I think Chris's keyboards really added to an already stellar performance on that song. Then I was ready to finish out the set . . . but the annoying people showed up in front of us. And the only think I don't understand is, do your talking . . . I don't care . . . anywhere but in front of people enjoying the show . . . they did not stick there long, and time for 100th. Which they seem to play faster and faster, but still a great tune, "Get Ry Cooder to sing my eulogy"
It was disappointing to only get one encore, but I guess it make me appreciate the two encore shows. N.O. is always great to hear and it's a great way to end a show.
There it is. Hope the D.C. show is better.
