Julie Doiron – yoga teacher

BlogTO has a story online today detailing Julie’s newest ventureL

As a celebrated Canadian indie musician, Julie Doiron is best known for her involvement in Eric’s Trip as well as her Juno award winning collaboration with the Wooden Stars. But these days she’s taking time out from her busy music career to teach yoga. In Toronto.

Doiron has been practicing Ashtanga yoga for 9 years. After receiving her teachers certificate this fall she began teaching two regular classes every Monday; one at a new studio called Bohemian Palace ($16, 9am) in Roncesvalles and another at Twisted Yoga Studio (PWYC, 7:30pm) in the Annex.

The Grand Bounce – Fall Tour

We’ve been having a great time out on the road, and looking forward to our own tour this fall. Since our last update, there have been a few more stops added along the way. We’ve added shows for our friends on the east coast, and just announced today, we will be playing the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Toronto on November 5th.

In our recent travels we stopped by the Dakota Tavern and recorded a few tracks. Check out the Dakota Sessions on CMT this Saturday, July 17th at 10pm.

We’re not done yet, so stay tuned to gorddownie.com for the full list of dates and ticket information.

Gord Downie presented with Key to City

Read the complete story at Buffalo Rising.

In efforts to find a better day for the city, Mayor Dyster is clearly a mayor who gets it (see some of his comments on the opening of Old Falls Street here). Also the USA Niagara Development Corporation, an arm of Empire State Development, which is now thankfully led by a no-nonsense guy from my neck of the woods who knows what it takes to make things happen on this side of the soda-pop line. It’s great to see Niagara Falls getting less tragic and more hip — and more green.

And about the green: at some point in the concert (perhaps around 7PM), Mayor Dyster will be honoring Gord for his environmental advocacy with a proclamation and a key to the city (mayors do these things). And as Gord is a big supporter of the Waterkeeper Alliance — an international network of organizations which work to keep their local water bodies “swimmable, fishable, drinkable,” and which includes WNY’s own Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper — Julie Barrett O’Neill, executive director and Riverkeeper, will be speaking as well.
